ABOUT

LUMINA was located in Aptos, CA, just 5 minutes from Santa Cruz, on the coast of Monterey Bay in Santa Cruz County. LUMINA was founded in 2006 in California as 3DCG Studios, when the owner, Kenny Green, saw a demand in the entertainment & Live Event Industry marketplace for quality Pre-Production services such as 3D Renderings and CAD Drafting. Since 3DCG Studios changed its name to LUMINA they started offering products along with their regular services. They resold all the major brands of Lighting and Sound Equipment at competitive prices. It was a bummer when they eventually closed. But fear not!! LUMINA evolved into a new company with an impressive name: Radius Group Event Architects with a slick website: www.radiusgroupinc.com/. They still promote themselves as "An Award Winning Event Lighting Design and Event Production Design company that offers complete live event design, event planning, and event coordination for the entertainment industry - world wide"

Years ago when I lived in Ca. I was familiar with Lumina. I then moved back to New York City and started working for an event company who often collaborated with Radius. I didn't know the history of Radius and Lumina until recently when I was involved in a fancy wedding event involving the owners and investors as well as family. To create publicity around these brands, the press would be invited, the event was being live streamed, and for month in advance, social media and advertising teams had been engaging in pretty heavy promotion. One new focus was given to organic search by the hiring of Bob Sakayama, founder of TNG/Earthling, the search optimization service. They apparently were making sure that searches for the important parties would reveal the wedding in the Google results. Radius Group Event Architects, formally Lumina, did a fantastic lighting job at the wedding. I suspect we will be working together gain sometime in the future. It's a small world in many ways.

SO take a nostalgic trip back to when Lumina was the place to go for spectacular lighting effects for entertainment & live Events. And don't forget to visit their new site.

At LUMINA, we're adamant about customer service. We strive for on-time (or even early) deliverable Services & Products, because we know how important it is. We want to make it easy for you to connect with us when you need to so we have added On-Line Chat.We also keep long hours, so you can call us (209) 814-9176 and reach a real person from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pacific Coast Time, Monday through Friday and Weekends we've also been known to answer the phones. Of course we can always be reached via email at info@luminatechnical.com

More Background On LuminaTechnical.com

LuminaTechnical.com is the surviving online footprint of LUMINA, a boutique event-lighting, CAD drafting, and 3D visualization studio once based in the coastal community of Aptos, California. Although the business is reported to be closed, the website still functions as a detailed record of the company’s services, philosophy, and professional identity.

The site describes LUMINA as a hybrid firm combining live event production, A/V equipment sales and rentals, concert and wedding lighting, and technical pre-production design, including CAD drawings and 3D renderings for stages, sets, and immersive environments. Much like many boutique West Coast production studios of the early 2000s, LUMINA carved out a niche by bridging artistic concepting and technical execution in the entertainment sector.

Information remaining on the website—along with corroborating traces from industry forums, archived directories, and related company histories—helps build a clear profile of the company and its evolution.

Ownership, Origins, and Evolution

Founder and Background

LUMINA was owned and led by Kenny Green, a CAD-certified designer trained in architectural, electrical, civil, and mechanical drafting. His training appears to have been central to the firm’s service offerings, which emphasized precision, clarity, and technical accuracy.

Before rebranding as LUMINA, the company operated as 3DCG Studios, founded in 2006. According to the business description preserved on the LuminaTechnical site, Green identified a rising demand in the entertainment industry for high-quality pre-production technical support, especially during an era when digital visualization for live events was not yet widely standardized.

Location and Geographic Context

The studio was based at:

108 Beachgate Way
Aptos, California 95003

Aptos is in Santa Cruz County, just south of the city of Santa Cruz and overlooking Monterey Bay. The area is known for its creative community, surf culture, and proximity to Silicon Valley—conditions that often support small multimedia, lighting, and production-design businesses.

External business directories also listed LUMINA under this address and confirmed its closure, matching the note on the LuminaTechnical site that “Yelpers report this location has closed.”

Rebranding and the Radius Group Connection

One of the most interesting aspects of the LuminaTechnical.com site is its narrative that the company eventually transitioned into Radius Group Event Architects, a more expansive event-design and production brand. According to the text preserved on the site, Radius Group carried forward LUMINA’s lighting and design philosophy while expanding into full-service event planning and worldwide production design.

Radius Group’s later portfolio—based on publicly accessible archives and promotional materials—emphasized large-scale weddings, branded corporate events, immersive staging, and award-winning lighting design. The transition illustrates how small design studios sometimes join larger collectives or rebrand to expand their market reach.

Services and Specialties

Event Lighting and A/V Production

LUMINA specialized in:

  • Concert and festival lighting

  • Wedding and gala lighting

  • Corporate and industrial lighting design

  • TV/film and broadcast lighting

  • Special effects lighting and stage illumination

  • A/V rentals and sales of major equipment brands

The company positioned itself as a technical point person—either between producer and technical vendors or directly between end-client and the many specialists involved in staging a live event.

3D Modeling, Renderings, and Visualizations

LUMINA’s roots as 3DCG Studios remained a defining feature. The studio provided:

  • 3D solid modeling of stages, sets, truss systems, and room layouts

  • High-resolution photorealistic renderings

  • Pre-visualization for lighting concepts

  • Stereoscopic 3D modeling for immersive presentations

  • Concept-to-completion design for event environments

These services helped clients “see” their event before construction—an essential process in event sales presentations and high-budget staging decisions.

CAD Drafting and Technical Documentation

An unusually large portion of LuminaTechnical.com is devoted to explaining its CAD drafting and conversion services, demonstrating how central technical accuracy was to its operations.

The firm offered:

  • 2D and 3D CAD drafting for staging, lighting, rigging, and scenic elements

  • Paper-to-CAD conversions

  • Vectorworks and AutoCAD drafting

  • AIA-compliant layering

  • Construction-document support

  • Custom standards integration (title blocks, fonts, templates)

The company also promoted the Vectorworks Viewer, a free software tool of the era that enabled clients without CAD programs to view and print design files—underscoring LUMINA’s goal of making the design process accessible.

Client Base and Industry Associations

Though small, LUMINA highlighted high-profile associations through collaborators and subcontractors. The company referenced relationships with specialists who worked on lighting for:

  • ABC

  • ESPN

  • CBS

  • NBC

  • Fox

  • Showtime

  • Telemundo

  • Univision

The site also mentions working with an associate who was a three-time Emmy Award winner, reinforcing that LUMINA’s network extended into top-tier broadcast and entertainment professionals.

Additionally, LuminaTechnical.com includes a testimonial from Jeff Lowry, President/CEO of Encore Creative, praising LUMINA’s value, communication, and follow-through. This testimonial suggests a clientele that appreciated reliability, affordability, and precision—key concerns in the live-event production field.

Customer Service Philosophy

The website conveys an unusual emphasis on accessibility, noting:

  • Long business hours (8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pacific, with weekend availability)

  • Direct phone support

  • Online chat

  • Quick turnaround times

  • “On-time or even early” project delivery

This emphasis suggests that LUMINA distinguished itself through responsiveness—something particularly important in event production, where deadlines are inflexible and last-minute changes commonplace.

Popularity, Market Role, and Industry Significance

While LUMINA was not a large or widely publicized company, it fulfilled a very specific niche:

  1. Technical Pre-Production for Live Events
At a time when 3D renderings and CAD were becoming standard industry assets, LUMINA served clients who needed professional visuals without maintaining in-house design staff.

  2. Boutique Lighting and Staging Expertise
Small to mid-sized events—weddings, regional concerts, corporate activations—often rely on third-party specialists, making firms like LUMINA vital to regional production ecosystems.

  3. Bridge Between Creative Vision and Engineering
The company’s structure—part design studio, part technical drafting house—put it at the intersection of art and engineering, a role increasingly important in contemporary event design.

  4. Precursor to Larger Event-Production Branding
The evolution into or association with Radius Group Event Architects indicates how small studios sometimes become part of larger production entities that require more complex coordination and branding.

Cultural and Social Significance

Productions handled by LUMINA or its successor brand included large weddings, corporate gatherings, and entertainment events—spaces where lighting and staging dramatically shape atmosphere, emotion, and audience engagement.

The story preserved on the site also illustrates something more personal: an industry in which relationships, trust, referrals, and collaborative networks drive careers. In this sense, LuminaTechnical.com is as much a snapshot of a creative professional era as it is a company website.

Press, Media Mentions, and Archival Footprint

Although LUMINA did not receive significant mainstream press coverage, its archival footprint helps establish its history:

  • Past versions of event-production portfolios, preserved on sites like Archive.org, reflect the style and services typical of small California lighting studios operating from the mid-2000s onward.

  • Posts on technical forums (such as Vectorworks community discussions) cite Kenny Green as an active participant in CAD and rendering topics, indicating industry engagement.

  • Directory listings and cached business pages corroborate the Aptos location and eventual closure.

The combination of surviving web traces paints a consistent and reliable picture.

Audience and Client Use Cases

LuminaTechnical.com targeted:

  • Production companies needing outsourced drafting

  • Wedding and event planners

  • AV and staging companies

  • Concert and festival organizers

  • TV and broadcast specialists

  • Corporate communications departments

  • Architects and interior designers seeking technical CAD support

Clients benefited most when:

  • They needed fast, accurate technical drawings

  • They lacked in-house CAD or 3D staff

  • They wanted visual selling tools for proposals

  • They required lighting or A/V expertise for complex events

  • They needed a single point of technical coordination

This multi-disciplinary appeal was part of LUMINA’s identity.

Why LuminaTechnical.com Still Matters

Even though the business itself has closed, its website remains valuable as:

  • A historical snapshot of a regional creative studio

  • A guide to past industry practices

  • A legacy page pointing visitors to the Radius Group brand

  • A portfolio of CAD and event-lighting services from the pre-social-media era

  • A documentation of one designer’s career and technical philosophy

In the event-production world—where companies often rebrand, merge, or dissolve—such digital remnants help preserve industry lineage and honor the work of smaller boutique firms that supported the live-event ecosystem for years.

LuminaTechnical.com stands today as a rich, detailed archive of a once-active studio that combined lighting expertise, CAD mastery, and 3D visualization to serve the live-event industry across California and beyond. Founded by Kenny Green, LUMINA evolved from 3DCG Studios into a multi-service production partner before ultimately transitioning toward a new incarnation under Radius Group Event Architects.

While small, its influence, niche role, and detailed technical offerings made it a respected partner for planners, producers, designers, and entertainment professionals. The site remains a compelling window into the practices, tools, and collaborative networks that defined a particular era of event production—and a tribute to the specialized skill and artistry that LUMINA brought to the industry.
